Peter van de Aa Gulf of Mexico Map 1725
THIS DUTCH MAP drawn by Peter van de Aa about 1725 was widely circulated in Europe as the "De Soto Map." It appears to be a close copy of the Sanson maps of 1650-56 but with the Soto landmarks moved south more correctly. A series of "Septentrionalis" maps from 1689 repeats this Soto order. This map is distributed today as a souvenir of the De Soto Memorial Park at Bradenton. (Library of Congress)
