Antonio de Arredondo
NOVEL ROUTE for Soto loops back on itself in 1742 map by Antonio de Arredondo. He copies Nairn with a wildly broken tip of Florida permitting passage between Bay of the Holy Spirit and Carlos Bay. The name Tampa indicates a shoal island that might be Anclote, a popular anchorage. An accurate portrayal of the continental shelf reveals growing hydrological knowledge. The name Tortugas is permanently displaced westward by addition of the name Marquesa for the former, distinctive circle of islets. (Library of Congress)
