1765 Puente Florida Map
OUTER ISLANDS of Florida's Gulf coast appear unmistakably for the first time on this 1765 map by Puente. Boca Gasparilla is located north of Tampa whereas on subsequent maps Gasparilla Island appears at the entrance to Charlotte Harbor, here designated Port Boca Grande. Also shown are Port S. Nivel (Sanibel) and the Ensenada of Carlos. The Suwannee River is given its original Spanish name of San Juan de Guacara -- the first three syllables of which were corrupted to present pronunciation.
