1640 Map Florida Cuba Strait

FLORIDA-CUBA STRAIT depths were compiled by Laet in 1640. The soundings are sparse and do not extend north of the Keys, but unusual shallows are depicted at the entrance of Ponce Bay. The Tortugas island cluster with six feet of water in the center clearly represents what was renamed Marquesas in 1622 but not yet generally adopted by map makers. Note descriptions of sea floor and current. (Library of Congress)
