1778 Kings Highway Florida Map by Joseph Purcell

THE CAMINO REAL, or King's Highway, from St. Augustine through Appalatchi to Pensacola, was surveyed in 1778 by Joseph Purcell. Some scholars believe Soto used a portion of this trail on his first year of march. The route crosses the Santa Fe River at High Springs and the Suwannee River -- here designated with both its Indian name Seguana and its Spanish name San Juan de Guacara -- at Dowling Park. Two paths lead southward to Larchua (Alachua) visited by Soto. (From "Final Report of the De Soto Expedition Commission, 1939)
