THE CAMINO REAL, or King's
Highway, from St. Augustine through Appalatchi
to Pensacola, was surveyed in 1778 by Joseph
Purcell. Some scholars believe Soto used
a portion of this trail on his first year of
march. The route crosses the Santa Fe River
at High Springs and the Suwannee River --
here designated with both its Indian name Seguana
and its Spanish name San Juan de Guacara
-- at Dowling Park. Two paths lead southward
to Larchua (Alachua) visited by Soto. (From "Final
Report of the De Soto Expedition Commission,
1939) |
