1846 WAR MAP shows in this enlarged portion a "bone heap" and an "island lake" north of Charlotte Harbor. The island may be a typical Indian ceremonial mound surrounded by a moat. An "old canal" is charted north of Lake Flirt and heads toward the ceremonial mound complex at Ft. Center. The canal may be the remains of the secret Indian waterway sought by Menendez. The Caloosahatchee River is shown as Sanybel River. South of Carlos Bay is Ostego (oyster) Bay and Estard (the place) Island, both of which have since acquired the name Estero.
