EARLIEST
HYDROLOGICAL chart of Florida coastal waters is this undated
and unsigned specimen which may have been drawn
sometime between the Arredondo map of 1742
when the continental shelf was first noted
and 1757 when Celi first determined the true
shape and size of Tampa Bay. The name Sanibel
appears as a river as it does on early U.S.
military maps as an alternate name for Caloosahatchee
River. Unfortunately the soundings in fathoms
is inconclusive for shallow water. (Spanish
