BAY OF ESPIRITU SANTO was mapped for England in 1769 by Thomas Jefferys, surveyor for the American colonies. He sounded Hillsborough Bay and the north entrance abandoned by Celi. A few depths are noted for Tampa Bay but attributed to Spaniards. Minimum water through the center channel is given as 2 3/4 fathoms while the north and south channels are given 3 fathoms.(Library of Congress)
