1783 San Carlos Bay - Charlotte Harbor - Soundings

SAN CARLOS BAY
was considered by Spanish to include all the great estuary now designated also as Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island Sound. This chart by Jose de Evia in 1783 gives two and a half fathoms through Sanibel passage. Island named for a forgotten cleric, Friar Gaspar, was attributed more than a century later to a legendary pirate, Gasparilla.
