EARLIEST COMPREHENSIVE soundings of the Peace River-Caloosahatchee estuary were made by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey between 1863-1880 before dredging. Two-fathom line in Charlotte Harbor and San Carlos Bay is en-chanced solid, one-fathom line in Pine Island Sound enhanced dotted. Boca Grande Pass gives minimum 14 feet at low tide. Once in, channel of not less that 12 1/2 feet prevails to within one league (2.6 miles) of Live Oak Point. Captiva Pass gives 91/2 feet over the bar, 8 1/2 feet with hard sand bottom in the center of the sound. San Carlos Bay gives narrow channels of two fathoms or more up to the Caloosahatchee delta and Pine Island Sound but many shallows thereafter.
