PONCE'S PIVOT - Boca Grande Channel
PONCE'S PIVOT probably occurred west of the Quicksands where there is plenty of sailing room and bottom. A much used passage in later years was Boca Grande Channel as it was directly north of Havana. Other channels were located near Key West and between the Quicksands Shoal and Marquesas Keys. All three trans-key channels gave 14 feet or more of depth at low tide but were narrow, crooked and dotted with reefs requiring detailed pilot knowledge.
