French Map of Gulf of Mexico - 1536

A FRENCH MAP representing the Gulf of Mexico in 1536 was compiled from unknown Spanish sources. An inscription at the largest Florida bay states, "Here the governor disembarked," meaning Panfilo de Narvaez. The second largest bay is designated Juan Ponce (de Leon). A 1544 copy substitutes "Baya Honda" for Baya Ponce. (British Museum, London)
