| THE MERCATOR WORLD MAP OF 1569 was the first to use modern projection, but its topography was wildly inaccurate. The Cape of Florida is shifted far south while Cape of the Cross and Seco River are placed north of Canaveral. The distinctive cluster of Marquesas islets are given their original name of Tortugas. Rio de Perlas (Pearls) was the Hillsborough emptying into Tampa Bay. (Prins Hendrik Museum, Rotterdam) | ||
