| MISLOCATION
OF TAMPA occurred
on this map by Antonio Herrera in 1601 where
that place name shows up for the first time.
The Calusa Indian town of Tanpa (also spelled
Toempa) was located well into historical times
on Useppa Island in the southern reach of Charlotte
Harbor. The Bay of Juan Ponce has been displaced
southward by Carlos Bay, also shown for the first
time on a map. The town of Ocita, where Soto
made his base camp, is placed impossibly far
to the north on an unnamed bay. (From "History
of America," Seville) |
